Its a kind of magic. Photoshop.

Sometimes you think somethings are impossible and then it appears in Photoshop. There are a few things that have made their way into Photoshop over the years that have made me do a double take. I love those magic surprises. The first time I saw the Content Aware Scale Feature (introduced in Photoshop CS4) I had to check to see if it was April 1st, because I thought after many years of being a designer that “that” was impossible. Anamorphic-ally scaling an image but without distorting it! It actually wasn’t in Photoshop that I saw it. It was on Youtube.

Shai Avidan (who presented the video) is now a Senior Research Scientist at Adobe. I was blown away by this as were many other people and this lead to to the technology being developed to the create the now famous Content aware fill. See a great tutorial from Russell Preston Brown. There have also been some pretty funny spoof type videos made as a homage to this great technology. This one here, the Photobomber and my own, lame attempt at an infomercial.
But hold the Phone, there appears to be a new kid in town. We have heard of sharpening before, but have you heard of deconvolution sharpening? I had and it seemed liked science fiction to me, which lead me to play several practical jokes on unsuspecting audiences across Australia and New Zealand using a technique of slowly enlarging a smart object layer with the image size panel.

But all that silliness aside how many times have you been asked as a Photoshop Professional to enhance an image more than is possible? I think it comes from TV and movie clips as shown on ” Lets Enhance” Lets vector in on the clip below and look at section A6.

Thats awesome. But just recently at Adobe Max in LA A new technology was sneaked out called de-blurring. Presented by Jue Wang.

Again I was blown away, I think this time I learnt my lesson. Nothing is impossible with Photoshop and the future is very bright indeed with Photoshop. I look forward to more magic in the future.

Creating EBOOKS and EPUBS from InDesign

Hello everyone that attended my ebook presentation at the InDesign Users Group in Melbourne.
As promised here are a bunch of resources that you may like. Firstly here is my Mikes Ebook slides.
If you want to try authoring in Adobe Buzzword, you should create an account on acrobat.com and Buzzword can export to both PDF and epub, however its quite basic. If you want to be able to publish for the Kindle store you may need to follow this pdf guide InDesign to Kindle and epub If you want to bust open a epub file and edit the goodies inside like the CSS then you could use this Adobe Air Application PDFXML inspector It will most certainly do the trick. If you are keen on reading your epubs and pdf files on the iPhone then you should try Stanza and you can send your files from one device to another very easily. You could also try i2reader I have not, but you may love it! it works much the same way as Stanza.

If you would like some more info on the Adobe Content Server for DRM or even Digital Editions you should check out these pages. there is also a link to the content server on there, but you will have to have more than a man look. As well as all this there is also an excellent video on the topic from last Octobers Max conference in LA. It goes on for while but if you really need to make these things then this will help you do it.

Adobe Creative Suite 4 is upon us, and I couldn’t be more excited, even if I was twins. We have a series of events coming up that everyone will be able to attend in Person or online if you wish to find out more. I will be posting my launch to CS4 video as soon as I record it, but have been busy with launch CS4 parties in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland.It Rocks there are literally hundreds if not thousands of mind blowing new features and enhancements to all the software. If I had to pick the most magical of them all it would be the content aware scaling in Photoshop CS4. I’m also a HUGE fan of the 3d capabilities in Photoshop CS4 extended that allows you to create “lenticular” images and 3D images that you can view with those wierd red and blue glasses like at the movies. If you like to view heaps more why not tune in to Adobe TV there is heaps video on CS4 over there http://tv.adobe.com/ The InDesign Users groups in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Auckland are ALL having CS4 launch parties. Watch what you want, when you want.The Adobe Media Player is cool and it has heaps of free TV channels including Comedy Central, CBS, Nickelodeon and MTV just to name a few. Its an Adobe Air Application that means its cross platform.You can even subscribe to creative Sweet TV using this Feed.

This is my new look website from now until I change it again. My first entry whilst Im setting it up. We may find a few things change as we go along. I’ve also just started my new job working with Adobe Pacific and al is going well so far.I am based in Melbourne but will be traveling all over the joint and making posts from exotic locations.
